Season Tips: Winter 2006

With the leaves fallen, winter is an optimal time to assess the structural integrity of a tree and its parts. This allows the arborist to prescribe any pruning or corrective procedure. Scheduling a Tree Risk Assessment is a way to recognize problems before they happen.

Consider pruning conifers this season. This timing help reduce the chance of bark beetle problems and aids in tree defense.

Middle winter pruning of most deciduous trees helps lessen unsightly, yet usually harmless, sap letting. The timing of pruning also allows for proper closure of pruning cuts and has minimal effect on tree growth.

Solar heating can be enhanced in wooded areas surrounding homes with selective and proper pruning.

A note on Elm trees: Now is the time to prune your elm. Most municipalities allow only a selected window of opportunity for any work on elms. This is due to the possible spread of DED (Dutch Elm Disease) with consideration to the habits of its vector.

Be sure to enjoy this season with those close to you. Smile when you feel it and pass on your goodness.
